The European Research Council has reversed its controversial decision to impose stricter submission limits after widespread criticism from the scientific community.
The original policy would have limited researchers to one grant application per funding cycle, down from the current two. Critics argued this would disproportionately harm early-career scientists and those working in fast-moving fields where rapid pivoting is essential.
More than 5,000 researchers signed an open letter opposing the change, calling it "counterproductive to scientific innovation." The ERC board acknowledged the feedback and reinstated the previous guidelines effective immediately.
